DentistA variety of studies have linked overall oral health to feelings of confidence, self-esteem, self-image and feelings of well – being. Findings have included: “oral complications of many systemic diseases…compromise …..quality of life” and that “the impact of less than optimal oral health“ can be felt in many areas of our lives potentially impacting how we sleep and eat and even how we interact socially with others. (1) These studies find that there is an almost universal impact resulting from poor oral health across all cultures and that while teeth and appearance are valued differently by many cultures, there is still a value attached to them nonetheless. Teeth matter!

Our teeth are powerful. They work hard helping us to chew food, talk, smile and express other emotions too. We celebrate the arrival of a child’s first tooth and in many cultures we reward the loss of that same tooth, in turn happy that an adult tooth takes its place. The role your Dentist plays in promoting oral health throughout these years is an important one. Regular visits with your Dentist at Brinkley Dental in Brampton, helps to ensure your teeth (both baby and adult) remain in great working condition. This means teeth are valuable and worth preserving, at any age!

Speaking of age, a study conducted locally, suggests the impact of strong healthy teeth is universal regardless of age. For example, it found persons “over 18 years old……reported limiting conversation with others because of oral health problems…avoided laughing or smiling….(and) reported being embarrassed. Among persons 50 years of age and older…..24 percent reported being self-conscious about their appearance at least occasionally because of problems with their teeth, mouth or dentures…” (2) There have even been stories in the news highlighting persons who were previously unemployable due to poor oral health securing employment after receiving extensive dental work. It is clear that teeth are a valuable commodity at any age.

To be sure, we don’t mean to suggest your Dentist take all the credit for your physical, mental and psychological well – being but certainly healthy teeth are proven to go a long way to supporting health, happiness and quality of life. The Brinkley Dental Team is happy to be a part of your life, promoting healthy teeth for a healthier you. With this in mind, call or visit us today and as always: ”don’t forget to be a BFF with your mouth and Brush that SMILE!”
